Resume tailoring for data analysts
Analytics hiring managers want to see that your work changed a decision, not just that you built a dashboard. Recruiters also filter on tool names, so the right mix of SQL, Excel, Power BI, Tableau or Python has to appear in your resume in the same words as the job post.
Prioritize these proof points
- The business question you answered and the decision it informed.
- Data volume and sources you worked with, such as rows, tables or systems.
- Time saved or revenue influenced by a report, model or automation.
- Tools named exactly as the posting names them: SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, Python.
- Stakeholders you presented to and how often.
Keywords ATS filters and recruiters look for
Use the ones that are true for you, in the same wording as the job description.
Before and after bullets
| Before (vague) | After (specific) |
|---|---|
| Made dashboards for the sales team. | Built a Power BI sales dashboard on 2M rows from SQL Server, replacing a weekly Excel process and saving the regional team about 6 hours a week. |
| Analysed customer data. | Segmented 80,000 customers with SQL and Python by repeat-purchase behaviour, which led marketing to retarget the top segment and lift repeat orders by 12%. |
These are examples of structure. Use your own real numbers and never claim work you did not do.
Fresher vs experienced
- Freshers: Show two or three real projects with a dataset, the question, the tools and the finding. A public dashboard or GitHub link helps more than a long skills list.
- Experienced: Lead with decisions influenced and money or time saved. Group tools by use (querying, modelling, visualisation) so a recruiter can scan them quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Which keywords matter most on a data analyst resume?
The ones in the job post. Most data analyst openings ask for SQL plus one BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, and often Excel or Python. Use their exact spelling in your skills and bullets.
How do I show impact as a data analyst without revenue numbers?
Use time saved, errors removed, reports retired, or the decision your analysis supported. Even "replaced a manual weekly report" is a concrete outcome.
Should I add Kaggle or personal projects to a data analyst resume?
Yes if you are a fresher or switching careers. State the dataset, your question, the tools used and the finding, and link the notebook or dashboard.
Does the ATS read charts or dashboard screenshots?
No. Keep your resume text-based. Describe what the dashboard did in a bullet and link to a portfolio if you want to show visuals.
